Stocks fell in the US on Friday as the market weighed first-quarter economic growth of 3.2% and sought more clarity on financial regulation legislation currently being debated in Washington. The falls will be reflected in ASEAN trading on Monday presenting another good day to buy quality stocks in the region. Indonesian shares closed higher by 44.392 points, or 1.51 percent, to a level of 2,971.252 points on Friday.

Indofood Sukses Makmur (INDF) was up 2 percent after it said its first-quarter net profit jumped 473 percent while lender Bank Rakyat (BBRI) gained 3.5 percent after it reported a 25 percent rise in first-quarter net profit. Some 2.67 billion shares worth 19.67 billion baht (about 614 million U.S. dollars) changed hands.

The head of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) said their recent selling showed they were cautious about the political violence.

“Fundamentals remain strong. The latest central bank data showed our economy is growing. Foreigners are cautious and monitoring the situation,” SET President Patareeya Benjapholchai told reporters.

Gains in Thailand were led by the biggest energy firm, PTT (PTT), and coal miner Banpu BANP, after a surge in global energy prices.

But shares affected most by the political protests were lower, including hotelier Minor International MINT.BK, down 2.1 percent, and Sahaviriya Steel SSI.BK, down 1.9 percent as the political climate hurt the outlook for construction and demand for steel. Thailand will be shut on Monday and Wednesday next week for holidays. The Thai market is trading at an average 10.5 times forward price to earnings, the cheapest in Southeast Asia.
