We are looking to see an ASEAN wide rally today as well as a strong uptick in India, China and Hong Kong. Asean market should advanve by .5% today.
India, China and Hong Kong should see gains of over 1%.

Wall Street was steady at noon but began to post modest gains in afternoon trade despite an unexpected drop in pending home sales raising new concerns about the economy.

The National Association of Realtors’ reported its index of home sales agreements fell 7.6 per cent in January from December. Contracts fell to their lowest level since April.

The drop in the number of buyers of previously occupied homes dampened some of the enthusiasm about better retail sales numbers.

Macy’s, Limited Brands and The Wet Seal all posted monthly sales topping analysts’ expectations. Wal-Mart raised its dividend by 11 per cent.

The drop in home sales followed a report on jobless benefits claims that had raised hopes about the Labor Department’s monthly payroll report due out Friday.

Initial jobless claims dipped last week after two straight weeks of unexpected increases, the Labor Department reported.

In mid-afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 30.46 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 10,427.22.

The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index had added 2.2 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 1120.99 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 6.22 points, or 0.27 per cent, to 2286.9.

Europe’s main stock markets closed lower after an uneven set of US economic data and as investors tried to get the measure of the latest twists in the Greek debt crisis.

The latest exchanges over Greece’s efforts to resolve its public deficit and debt crisis also appeared to undo some of the goodwill generated on Wednesday when Athens announced an additional set of austerity measures.

Greek comments that it could seek help from the International Monetary Fund if its eurozone partners failed to back it were brushed off by European Central Bank head Jean-Claude Trichet.

Meanwhile, Germany insisted Athens still must sort out its own problems first before any aid.

Dealers said the latest exchanges muddied the waters ahead of a key visit by the Greek premier to France and Germany at the weekend when markets had been expecting the two powers to come up with concrete support measures for Athens.

In London, the main FTSE 100 index slipped 6.05 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 5527.16 points.

Germany’s DAX fell 22.56 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 5795.32 points In Paris, the CAC 40 dropped 14.11 points, or 0.37 per cent, to 3828.41 points.

Commodities
Oil prices fell as the US dollar increased against other major currencies.

In London, Brent crude gave up 48 US cents to $US78.77 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange.
