ASEAN STOCK WATCH 7 April 2010

Investors around the world were looking into opportunities in ASEAN after data in the U.S. labour market showed a turnaround in confidence over rapid recovery in the global economy and a brightening profit outlook for ASEAN companies. Strong economic prospects in the region continued to attract oversea’s funds.

Indonesia’s stock index ended down on Tuesday as investors took profits after the index hit another record high in early trade while other ASEAN stocks ended higher, following a global rally on Monday.

Around ASEAN Singapore was up 0.24 percent to a 20-month high, Malaysia was up 0.2 percent to 25-month highs and Philippines rose to their highest level in more than 2 years a 2.1 percent rise.

Indonesia, ASEAN’s best performer, gained 0.8 percent in the early trading to hit a new all time record high of 2,911.463 points, but retreated and closed 0.2 percent weaker as investors took profits. The index has risen 13.7 percent so far in 2010. Market heavyweight Astra International lost 3 percent and Telekom Indonesia fell 1.8 percent. Ebeling Heffernan Strong Buy Bumi Resources jumped 10.9 percent after it signed a contract with a Japanese buyer.

Trading volume in Jakarta surged to hit over 8.4 billion shares compared to a 90-day average volume of over 3.4 billion shares.

Thai financial markets were closed on Tuesday for a public holiday and trading will resume on Wednesday.

In Kuala Lumpur, the index hit a 25-month high with 0.2 percent rise led by 3.5 percent jump in Malaysia’s largest power producer Tenaga Nasional on increasing demand for electricity in line with a resurgent economy.

The Philippines index .PSI jumped 2.1 percent to hit a 26-month high helped by a 1.8 percent rise in the market heavyweight Philippines Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and a 3 percent gain in conglomerate Ayala Corp. Foreigners, who had been net sellers in the past two years, have bought a net of 6.8 billion pesos ($152 million) worth shares in the first quarter, bourse data showed.

Vietnam .VNI rose for a fourth session, adding 0.1 percent, led by a 1.6 percent gain in Vietinbank CTG and a 0.7 percent rise in Baoviet Holdings BVH.
