Ukraine to Forge Friendly Relations and Cooperation with ASEAN

H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN, congratulated and welcomed the accreditation of H.E. Mr Volodymyr Pakhil, Ambassador of the Republic of Ukraine to ASEAN. SG Minh also expressed his appreciation for the Ukrainian government’s  desire  to forge friendly relations and cooperation with ASEAN and ASEAN Member States.

SG Minh informed Ambassador Pakhil on the progress made by ASEAN in its effort to achieve the goal of ASEAN Community by 2015. He further suggested exploring practical cooperation in the fields that Ukraine has expertise and interest for mutual benefits, which would also serve as the foundation for closer relationship. These may include support for the areas under the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity (MPAC), particularly the public-private partnership in implementing the MPAC, ASEAN Community building—particularly narrowing development gap and Initiative for ASEAN Integration Work Plan II; as well as business and investment promotion between Ukraine and ASEAN.

Ambassador Pakhil stated that it was a historic moment for him to be accredited as the first Ambassador of Ukraine to ASEAN. The Government of Ukraine regards ASEAN as an important regional grouping and is interested in pursuing closer cooperation with ASEAN. Ukraine’s relations with ASEAN are also built upon the strong foundation of its relations with individual ASEAN Member States.

Ambassador Pakhil informed that he is working on the visit of the President of Ukraine to the region in early 2014, when  the President is also expected to visit Jakarta and the ASEAN Secretariat. This would provide another boost for closer ASEAN-Ukraine friendship  and cooperation.

SG Minh and Ambassador Pakhil also exchanged views on the recent developments in ASEAN as well as regional and international issues of interest.

Ambassador Pakhil presented the Letter of Credence as Ambassador of the Republic of Ukraine to ASEAN to SG Minh yesterday at the ASEAN Secretariat.

AseanAffairs   04 January 2011
By David Swartzentruber

As this writer qualifies as an “old hand” in observing Thailand with a track record dating back 14 years, it is time take a shot at what may unfold in Thailand in 2011.

The first issue that can’t be answered is the health of Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol, who is now 83 years old. He is the world's longest reigning monarch, but elaborate birthday celebrations in December failed to mask concern over his health. More
