Belgium Commits to Support ASEAN Community Building

JAKARTA, 5 December 2014 - H.E. Patrick Hermann presented his Letter of Credence as Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to ASEAN to the Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Mr. Le Luong Minh at the latter’s office today.

SG Minh welcomed Ambassador Hermann and expressed appreciation to the Government of Belgium for its support to ASEAN Community building efforts through sharing of lessons and best practices. He noted that Belgium has been a staunch supporter and champion for European integration and that Brussels has become the symbol and seat of the EU.

Ambassador Hermannreaffirmed that Belgium remains committed to work with ASEAN bilaterally and through the ASEAN-EU cooperation framework. He also reassured that his country will continue to render its support to ASEAN integration beyond 2015. He recalled that among the experience and lessons shared with ASEAN by Belgium included “ASEAN-EU Regional Integration Strategy: Host Country Perspective” and “The Belgian Perspective in the Field of Disaster Management in the Framework of the EU.”

SG Minh briefed Ambassador Hermann on the recent developments in ASEAN, including measures and challenges faced by ASEAN in its integration efforts. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern and interest.

It is commonplace in journalism to write two types of articles at the transition point between the year that has passed and the New Year. As this writer qualifies as an “old hand” in observing Thailand with a track record dating back 14 years, it is time take a shot at what may unfold in Thailand in 2011.

The first issue that can’t be answered is the health of Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol, who is now 83 years old. He is the world's longest reigning monarch, but elaborate birthday celebrations in December failed to mask concern over his health. More
