Cambodia ranks third among Asean in press freedom index
Cambodia ranks 143rd out of 197 countries in terms of press freedom, down from 117 a year earlier, Reporters Without Borders said on Wednesday.
The Paris-based group said Cambodia ranked third among Asean countries after Thailand (135) and Indonesia (139). Cambodia was followed by Malaysia (145), the Philippines (147), Singapore (149), Myanmar (151), Laos (168) and Vietnam (172). China was ranked even lower (173).
The top three countries overall were Finland, the Netherlands and Norway while the bottom three were Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan.
The Club of Cambodian Journalists expressed both concern and encouragement. It said freedom of the press should be fully respected to ensure that no journalists are killed, arrested, threatened or sued while they are doing their job to inform the public.
