ASEAN, Japan hold Television Festival
The ASEAN-Japan Television Festival 2015 concluded with a colourful public event attended by celebrities, television personalities and performers from the ten ASEAN Member States and Japan on 12 September at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur. The audience were entertained by performances of Malaysian singer Suki Low and rock band Bunkface. Popular Malaysian actress Sharifah Amani greeted the crowd. From Japan were comedy act Gamarjobbat, jazz club band Jabberloop and tap dancers Saro.Doji.Gunjo.
The celebrities promoted television shows to introduce audiences to their countries' rich heritage and tourism destinations. The free show was watched by an audience of Kuala Lumpur residents and tourists and brought ASEAN to a wider public.
"ASEAN recognises the power of television in telling stories about the lives of our people, their view-points, and their dreams," H.E. Dr. AKP Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs, stressed during the opening ceremony on 9 September.
The festival opened with a two-day forum for the delegates to discuss trends and opportunities for ASEAN-Japan collaboration in television such as co-production, programme exchanges, media convergence and copyright protection. Speakers from ASEAN and Japan ranged from policy-makers to producers and content developers. H.E. Dato' Jailani Johari, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia of Malaysia, noted that the theme of the festival "Production and Broadcasting in the 21st Century" is apt in view of the ever changing landscape of the global broadcasting industry.
Mr. Mabito Yoshida, Deputy Director-General of the Information and Communications Policy Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan, encouraged ASEAN to capitalise on Japan's wide variety of content and technological developments to enhance mutual understanding and skills development.
The participants were in agreement that contents need to engage the audience better, including reaching out to young people through new media and developing localised content. They also recognised the importance of cooperation among television producers and stations to harness creativity and facilitate technology transfer. The participants resolved to work together to ensure that the television industry continues to be current and relevant.
During the festival, a day was dedicated to an exhibition, screening and pitching sessions where television production companies explored co-production and other partnership opportunities.
The ASEAN-Japan Television Festival 2015 was organised by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, Malaysia and Radio Television Malaysia, with support from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan; Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan; Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF); ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat.
