Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Monday received the inaugural Asean Transformational Leader Award for his commitment to transformational leadership for over a decade, reported national news agency Bernama.

The award was jointly presented by Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute's (Asli) chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and founder of the AseanAffairs magazine (a leading global magazine on Asean) S.Roy shortly after Najib delivered his keynote address at the Axiata's 7th Asean Leadership Forum at Sunway in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia on Monday. The forum was organised by Asli in cooperation with AseanAffairs.

While Asean is now clearly on the road to recovery from the global economic crisis, the region must transform itself, with the member countries becoming more connected to ensure its relevance for the future generations, Malaysian daily the StarBiz quoted the prime minister as saying.

“We believe a more connected region will enhance regional integration,” he said, adding that the region could expect to see a bold and comprehensive master plan for Asean Connectivity by October.

The forum brought together government, business and thought leaders to share their views on the challenges and key issues facing the region, as well as to evaluate the business and investment opportunities brought about by the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) and China-Afta.
